Peace Card 2020
FYI…This year’s Peace card is an all out commission by the adroit, multi-talented artist William "Bill" Seifert. And, he happens to be a tenured Jackson Heights resident. It was about 2013 when we met. Bill had his photography exhibited at a local bakery. We chatted and exchanged artists’ info.
Bill is also a member of the Jackson Heights Art Club(JHAC). The JHAC sponsors two annual outside, neighborhood art exhibits in the Spring and Fall called "On the fence" - The fence is in front of Public School 69 (PS 69).
“On the Fence” exhibits are weekend affairs and each space needs to be monitored by the artist themselves. Bill encouraged me to join one weekend. After a little resistance from myself, I packed some photos and made it happen. Before 2020, I’d been attending “On the fence” with my photography for about 3 years…always making sure that I had a space next to Bill: ornery, but INCREDIBILY creative
In the Fall of 2019(Sept), I’d seen one of his illustrations that captured my idea of a peace card. I asked if he would hand-make the complete 2020 collection based on that design? He said "yes". Told him there was no hurry. By Oct 2019, he had the series finished and my only responsibility was to stuff, seal, & stamp the envelopes! With a “No Trespassing” label attached to the box by Bill, the cards have been gathering dust in my apartment for over a year. From their lofty perch on my bookshelf, they have "seen" much over the past 12+ months: THE COVID19 PANDEMIC; work-from-home; fluctuation of economy; peaceful and riotous marches; all kinds of global, national, & local fires; USPS “hiccups”; on-site school/remote schooling; polls/debates/elections/counting; ZOOM/Video gatherings; and MORE....2020 has been "unprecedented". During my idle time, i'd considered mailing these out way before the end of the year, but decided otherwise…
